Changes for CGDB V 10.0

CGDB Version 10 contains changes to most of the records, as follows:

  • Cellular Shades: The cellular shade products in the previous CGDB versions have been significantly reworked, using the new THERM modeling method, and any records using the previous version of cellular shade modeling were removed. This resulted in many fewer cellular shade entries in the CGDB.

  • Other BSDF-based Shades: All of the records that are based on BSDF XML files have been edited as follows:

    • Openness changed to permeability. The value for permeability was changed from TIR to Specular Tvis according to AERC 1.1.

    • A number of fabrics with OZ in the file name got emissivity and TIR updated.

  • Certification: There is now a symbol in the Certification column in the Shading Layer Library List View, indicating which records are approved for certification

    • AERC: Any record with an "@" symbol in the certification column can be used for AERC product certifications.

    • NFRC: Any record with a "#" symbol in the certification column can be used for NFRC production certifications.

CGDB Installation

Because so many records were changed, and many were deleted, we recommend that you do the following when installing CGDB 10.0:

  • Uninstall previous versions of the CGDB

From the Microsoft Windows Control Panel, uninstall whatever previous version of CGDB was installed. This will completely clean out the XML directory and the old databases from previous versions in C:\Users\Public\LBNL\LBNL Shared. There were so many changes to the XML files for this release that it is best to completely uninstall old versions.

  • Download and Run the installation file

    • Download this file (the link is at the top of this page), which is an installation file for CGDB V 10.0

      • CGDBsetup-10-0.exe

    • Run the downloaded installation file (double click on it in your "downloads" directory for example)

    • The installation program will copy the following files to C:\Users\Public\LBNL\LBNL Shared

      • W74-CGDB-10_0.mdb: This is a WINDOW database that contains the CGDB V 10.0 records, in the Shade Material and Shading Layer Libraries, for the WINDOW 7.4 program. It has three records (see the release notes) specifically needed for NFRC modeling in WINDOW 7.4.

      • W75-CGDB-10_0.mdb: This is a WINDOW database that contains the CGDB V 10.0 records, in the Shade Material and Shading Layer Libraries, for the WINDOW 7.5 program. It has the complete set of records for CGDB V 10.0.

      • XML: this is a folder that contains all the XML / BSDF / THMX files needed for this version of the CGDB.

See the note above about uninstalling previous versions of the CGDB, which will clean out this XML directory, and then the new files for CGDB 10.0 will be copied into that directory during the installation of CGDB 10.0.

Updating a WINDOW Database

NOTE: The default WINDOW database (W7.mdb) that is installed with WINDOW Version 7.6.02 already has been updated to CGDB 10.0 so these steps are not necessary for that database.

Because so many records were changed, and many were deleted, we recommend that when you are updating a WINDOW database with a previous version of the CGDB, that you start with a "clean" Shade Material and Shading Layer library set, by do the following when updating a WINDOW database to V 10.0 of the CGDB (basically deleting all existing records and reimporting all records from CGDB V 10.0):

  • Open the WINDOW database that you want to update

If the database is from an older version of WINDOW, it will ask to update to the latest version of the database. Click yes, knowing that you will not be able to open this updated database with older versions of the program. If you want to be able to do that, make a copy of the database before opening it with the latest version of WINDOW.

  • Shade Material Library - Delete all but 1 of the existing records

Except for custom records that you have created, delete all but one (for example ID 30101, Slat Metal A) of the default records in the Shade Material Library. Deleting all the records may crash WINDOW which is why it is recommended to leave at least 1 record.

  • Shading Layer Library - Delete all but 1 of the existing records

    • Except for custom records that you have created, delete all but one (for example ID 1, Venetian A0) of the default records that came originally from a CGDB database. Deleting all the records may crash WINDOW which is why it is recommended to leave at least 1 record.

    • For some records (that reference Shade Material records), the program will ask if you want to delete associated Shade Material records. Click the Yes button for these records

  • Delete the XML directory in the folder where the WINDOW database you are updating is located

    • WINDOW will make an XML subdirectory in any directory where a WINDOW database is located. This step is to delete the records in that XML subdirectory, so that you start with a clean slate when updating that WINDOW database to the latest CGDB

    • First make sure to save (somewhere else) any custom XML files you may have created

    • From previous versions of the CGDB, there are many XML files that are no longer used. Deleting this directory after opening the WINDOW database being updated prevents a slew of information messages saying that the (old) XML files don't exist (for the old CGDB records that were in the Shading Layer Library before you deleted them all in the step above)

    • When you import the CGDB V 10.0 records into the Shading Layer and Shade Material Libraries, the program will automatically make an XML subdirectory (if it doesn't already exist) and copy the appropriate XML (and other) files into that subdirectory

  • Now both the Shading Layer Library and the Shade Material Library should have no records in them

  • Shading Layer Library - Import new (V 10.0) records

    • Import all the Shading Layer Library records from the CGDB V 10 WINDOW database that you installed

    • Click the Cancel button for any message that says "Adding a Record" and asks you to enter an ID for a new record in either to the Glass library or the Shade Material Library (this prevents the program from making duplicate records for the same material in the Shade Material Library)

    • If you import all the Shading Layer Library records from the CGDB 10.0 database, there should be a total of 280 records in the Shading Layer Library when you are finished.

  • Shade Material Library - Import new (V 10.0) records

    • Import all the Shade Material Library records from the CGDB V 10 WINDOW database that you installed

    • Click the Cancel button for any message that says "Adding a record" and asks you to enter an ID for a new record

    • If you import all the Shade Material Library records from the CGDB 10.0 database, there should be a total of 62 records in the Shade Material Library when you are finished

  • XML sub-Directory records

If you import all the Shading Layer Library records from the CGDB 10.0 database, there should be 220 files in the XML sub-directory where the newly updated WINDOW database is located.

Version 9.0 (for WINDOW 7.4 and WINDOW 7.5)
Released: July 26, 2017

Release Notes:

CGDB version 9.0 is only compatible with WINDOW 7.4.8 (and later) and WINDOW 7.5.15 (and later).

This version of CGDB contains new products for Alkenz and Intigral, products from a new manufacturer, Winbuild, and roller shutter definitions under "Generic" (see the Release Notes).

Additionally, this version only contains products for this version and DOES NOT include the products in the previous versions.

If you have never installed the CGDB before, or need records from previous versions, first install Version 8.0 to import from that database, then install this version, 9.0, to import from this database.

There is a separate CGDB database for each version of WINDOW (7.4 and 7.5), because the database structure is different between the two versions.

Version 4.0 (for WINDOW 6.3)
Released: May 01, 2015

Release Notes:

CGDB Version 4.0 for WINDOW 6.3 is a zip file, not an installation file. It is a WINDOW 6.3 database, so the records can be imported directly into another WINDOW 6.3 database.

This version only contains Shade Materials and Shading Layer Library records for the ODL Venetian Blinds, in order that NFRC simulators can model products using those blinds in WINDOW 6.3. In the future, when NFRC is using WINDOW 7.3, the CGDB will not be created for WINDOW 6.3.

Version 1.2 Beta (for WINDOW 6.3)
Released: May 01, 2015

Release Notes:

The Version 1.2 Beta for WINDOW 6 contains generic example data as well as data measured by LBNL of several manufacturers' products, including woven shades and venetian blinds. Most of the measurements performed by LBNL have BSDF XML files associated with them, which must be available to the WINDOW program in order to simulate the systems.

LBNL is still developing the measuring and submittal procedures so that manufacturers can submit measured data for review and inclusion in future CGDB releases. When these procedures are complete, it is hoped that manufacturers will measure and submit data for their products to LBNL for inclusion in the CGDB. In a similar process to the IGDB (International Glazing Database) it is envisioned that the CGDB will be released multiple times per year as new materials and systems are measured and added to the database.
