Below is a list of RESFEN modeling issues that have been discovered by users, and possible solutions. For RESFEN support, send email to RESFENHelp@lbl.gov

INSTALLATION

Installation Problems

Installation Problems 
In order to install the program with the Microsoft NT (4.0), 2000, and XP, you must be Administrator or part of the Administrators Group on your machine. To check if you are Administrator, do the following:

Go to Control Panel, then "Users and Password" in Microsoft 2000, or "User Accounts" in Microsoft XP
Find the current username (yours) and look in the group column. It should say: Administrators
If the current username does NOT say Administrators, contact your IT department to become Administrator, or to have someone with Administrator privileges install the program on the machine.

Minimum computer requirements:

Pentium class or better.
At least 32 MB of random access memory (RAM). For optimal operation, 64 MB or more of RAM is preferrable.
Microsoft Windows 98TM, Windows 2000TM, Windows XPTM, Windows METM, or Windows NTTM
(The program WILL NOT run with Windows 3.1TM,  Windows NT 3.51TM or Windows 95TM). 
Hard disk drive with at least 40 MB of available disk space
Printer supported by Microsoft Windows (serial, parallel, or shared over a network).

Report Feature Does Not Work: 
RESFEN5 needs the file RICHTX32.OCX in order for the Report feature to work. This file is not included in the current installation (this will be remedied soon). This file is used by many programs so it may already be installed on your computer, and RESFEN5 will display the Report properly. However, if the Report button doesn't display anything, you need to the following:

Download the RICHTX32.ocx file by clicking here.

and save or copy it into your system directory. The standard system directories for the various versions of MS Windows are listed below:

For MS NT/2000:

copy file into c:\winnt\system32

For MS Windows XP:

copy file into c:\windows\system32

You also need to "register" the file by doing the following:

Go to the Start menu, click on Run

In the Run dialog box, type the following, depending on your operating system:

For MS Window 95/98, type:

regsvr32 \windows\system\RICHTX32.OCX

For Windows NT or 2000, type:

regsvr32 \WINNT\system32\RICHTX32.OCX

For Windows XP, type:

regsvr32 \windows\system32\RICHTX32.OCX

Make sure you put a space between regsvr32 and the directory path.

You should get a dialog box saying the registration was successful


PROGRAM CHANGES

Results: 
RESFEN 6.0 will not calculate the same results as RESFEN 5.0 because of changes to the underlying modeling assumptions. Read Chapter 6 of the User Manual for more information.

PROGRAM FEATURES

WINDOW 6.3 Window Libraries: 
RESFEN 6.0 can read the current version of WINDOW 6.3 database.

SI and IP Units
RESFEN has the ability to display input and results in both SI and IP units. This is a very new feature and users are encouraged to test it’s functionality and accuracy, in particular in the “Window by Orientation” results.

Multi-Calc
RESFEN5 allows multiple House Library records to be selected in the List View and then simulated as a group by clicking on the lightning bolt Calc toolbar button.


TIPS

User Defined Windows

There are two ways to create your own windows in RESFEN.

 

1 – input U-factor/SHGC

2 – Use a WINDOW database and DOE2 file – this method allows the program to use angular data for the window and will be more accurate, and will generate results closer to the Energy Star results, because this is the method we used to generate those results. This method is explained in more detail in the RESFEN 5 User Manual, page 6-23.

WEATHER DATA

Cannot Find Weather File, Simulation Cancelled
This message can appear when pressing the calc button under a few different circumstances, such as:

Input file is not in the RESFEN program directory -- the input files must be in the same directory as the RESFEN program, and not even in a subdirectory of that directory

Converting Energy Plus EPW files to RESFEN Weather Files
It is possible to convert Energy Plus weather files (EPW files) to the BIN format files used by RESFEN (which is using the DOE2 simulation engine), using the eQ_WthProc utility. Here is the website which explains how to install and run the utility:

Download a zip file which contains a file for each US location (installed by default) which contains the weather statistics for that location, USWeatherStats.zip

Download a zip file with the binary Chilean weather files, Chile-Weather.zip. In the RESFEN6 directory ( for Windows 7 it would be C:\Users\Public\LBNL\RESFEN6\ and for Windows XP it would be C:\Program Files\LBNL\RESFEN6 ), make a subdirectory called Weather-Chile, and unzip this file into that directory.

Japanese Locations:

Download a zip file with the binary Japanese weather files, Japan-Weather.zip. These weather files were made from Energy Plus EPW files using the eQ_WthProc conversion program, found on this website: http://doe2.com/index_wth.html

In the RESFEN6 directory ( for Windows 7 it would be C:\Users\Public\LBNL\RESFEN6\ and for Windows XP it would be C:\Program Files\LBNL\RESFEN6 ), make a subdirectory called Weather-Japan, and unzip this file into that directory. This weather data is not included in the Installation, but can be added to the program through the Location Library. Here is a list of the cities in this zip file:


ENERGY CALCULATIONS

Whole House Total Energy Calculations

The Total Annual Energy result for the Whole House is calculated as "Source" energy, in MBtu (Million British Thermal Units). The "Source" descriptor means that the electric energy, in most cases the Cooling energy (from electric air conditioning), has been converted from kWh (kilowatt-hours) to MBtu and then is multiplied by a "Site to Source" factor.

The "Site to Source" factor is used to take into account the fact that there is an efficiency loss between the "source" where the electricity is generated (the power plant) and the "site" where it is finally consumed, in this case a residence, due to generation and transmission losses. (Note that RESFEN currently uses an approximate Site-to-Source electricity conversion factor of 3.0. However, the US Department of Energy's 2006 Buildings Energy Data Book uses a more precise factor of 3.18. We plan to make this change in the next version of RESFEN). The screen shot below, shows the RESFEN Preferences dialog box (go to the Options menu, Preferences choice), where the value for the Site-to-Source conversion factor is shown (it can't be changed, but is displayed for informational purposes). In this case, it is set to 3.0.

Below are the details of how the Total (source) Annual Energy Whole House energy consumption is calculated for the results shown above:

 
    Heating: 91.5 MBtu
    Cooling: 706 kWh
    Total (Source): 98.7 MBtu
 
To convert the cooling electricity in kWh to MBtu:
 
    1 kWh = 3413 Btu
    1 kWh = 0.003413 MBtu
 
    706 kWh * 0.003413 kWh/MBtu = 2.409578 MBtu (site)
 
Converting the cooling site energy to cooling source energy using the Site-to-Source conversion factor of 3.0:
 
    2.409578 MBtu (site) * 3.0 = 7.228734 MBtu (source) for cooling
 
    91.5 MBtu (heating, source) + 7.228734 MBtu (cooling, source) = 98.728734 , which rounds to 98.7 MBtu (source)

    98.7 MBtu (source) is the value RESFEN reports in the Results Tab, under the Total (source) column for Annual Energy Totals.


COST CALCULATIONS

How to Convert $/cubic foot to $/therm for Natural Gas
In order to convert $/cubic foot for natural gas into $/therm, which are the gas cost units in THERM, do the following conversion:

Multiply the cost of the natural gas in cubic feet ($/cubic feet) times 0.01 to get cost per Therm ($/Therm)

Background:

1 cubic foot of natural gas = 1,000 Btus

1 Therm = 100,000 Btus

Therefore:

1 Therm = 100 cubic feet of natural gas 
                     or 
1 cubic foot of natural gas = 0.01 Therm

Example:

$0.10 / cubic foot of natural gas = $0.001 / Therm


HVAC MODELING

How to Model Electric Resistance Heating
RESFEN 5 does not model electric resistance heating. To get a rough estimate of the energy consumption for electric resistance heating, it is possible to model the building with a gas furnace/air conditioner, and then convert the gas consumption to electricity at an efficiency of 0.70 for existing construction and 0.78 for new construction.

To convert gas furnace heating results in MBtus to kWh, multiply the results in MBtu for heating by:

205.1 for existing construction

228.50 for new construction

Background:

Conversion for Btu to Watt-hours (W-h)

1 Btu        = 0.293 W-h

1 MBtu     = 1,000,000 Btu 

                 = 293,000 W-h/MBtu 

                 = 293 kWh/MBtu

Taking into account the furnace efficiencies of 0.70 for existing construction and 0.78 for new construction:

Existing Construction:

293 kWh/MBtu * 0.70 

= 205.1 kWh/MBtu

New Construction:

293 kWh/MBtu * 0.78 

= 228.50 kWh/MBtu

Example calculation:

If the Whole House Totals for Heating are as follows (for a gas furnace):

       Heating = 55.12 MBtu

Calculate:

55.12 MBtu * 205 kWh/MBtu 

= 11299.6 kWh
