Procurement specifications
Procurement specifications are key to obtaining tailored technological solutions at competitive prices. These documents provide specific requirements for all aspects of a technology and enable manufacturers to understand the full scope of their involvement on a project.
The Times developed procurement specifications for each of the technological solutions evaluated at the daylighting mockup. These specifications evolved over the nine-month field test period as The New York Times came to understand the particulars of various systems, how they are implemented, what processes are needed to commission such systems to obtain reliable performance, and what characteristics of operation are critical to the successful use of the technologies in the final Headquarters building.

Control zones for daylight, manual switching, cove architectural lighting, and emergency fixtures were defined for all DALI fixtures on each floor of the Headquarters building.
These specifications were written by Glenn Hughes, Director of Construction, The New York Times, and are provided here for public benefit.
